The Andoversford-based handler talks us through his squad, which includes exciting pair Chianti Classico and The Kemble Brewery.
Kim Bailey added to his Cheltenham Festival tally when Chianti Classico scored impressively by four and a half lengths in the Ultima Handicap Chase last March. That was the icing on the cake for a successful 2023/24 season which hauled in 32 winners and £498,250 in prize money.
Chianti Classico has already made a healthy contribution to the Thorndale Farm coffers this season with his three-length success in the Sodexo Live! Handicap Chase at Ascot bagging £56,950. Bailey’s biggest headache since regarding the horse, is now where to head next with his current stable star?
Bailey, already on 16 winners for the season, said: “I haven’t worked him since he ran and he is more than likely to go for the Becher Chase than anything. He is in a difficult situation as, at the end of the day, he is rated 157 and there are only three horses in Britain rated higher than him over three miles and there are 27 or so in Ireland so it makes the job quite difficult.”
“He is not a Gold Cup horse by any means as he needs to improve and I have always looked on him as a Grand National horse so that is why we are going to go for the Becher Chase to find out if he is.”
Bailey has plenty of untapped potential at his Andoversford-based stable and here, he kindly spoke to Tony Elves for attheraces.com about his team.

I would think you would see him in bumpers this season. He is a horse we like but he is a big horse and he will need time.
Form profile
A 109-rated hurdler. Off the mark in a handicap hurdle at Ludlow (2m) in October when beating Zodiac Star two lengths off a mark of 103.
Trainer says
She is a consistent mare and she ran well the other day. She won at Ludlow and her run at Exeter was slightly disappointing as they didn’t go quick enough early on. She will win again and she will jump a fence - she’s a nice mare.
Form profile
A 125-rated chaser. Finished third, beaten two and a quarter lengths to Make Me A Believer in a handicap chase at Exeter (3m) in November of last year on his chasing bow and unlucky to be brought down when in close contention in a novices’ handicap chase at Uttoxeter later that month off a mark of 127. Pulled up on his only other start at Exeter (3m6½f) in December of last year off that mark.
Trainer says
We are desperately waiting for ground and he was desperately unlucky not to win last year. I am very pleased with him and he should be winning soon.
Form profile
Rated 87 on the Flat when trained by Ralph Beckett and a winner on three occasions. Ended his Flat campaign with a neck success from Flower Of Dubai off a mark of 83.
Trainer says
He is a good Flat horse and we have given him a year to get acclimatised to go jump racing. He is ten days to two weeks away from running and if he translates his Flat form to ability over hurdling then he will be a nice horse.
Form profile
A 157-rated chaser. Progressive gelding who won three time over fences last season and gained his most important success in the Ultima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham (3m1f) in March when scoring by four and a half lengths from Twig off a mark of 143. Made all in the Sodexo Live! Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Ascot (3m) this month when making all to beat Highstakesplayer three lengths off a mark of 152.
Trainer says
I haven’t worked him since he ran and he is more than likely to go for the Becher Chase than anything. He is in a difficult situation as, at the end of the day, he is a 157-rated and there are only three horses in England rated higher than him over three miles and there are 27 or so in Ireland so it makes the job quite difficult. He is not a Gold Cup horse by any means as he needs to improve and I have always looked on him as a Grand National horse so that is why we are going to go for the Becher Chase to find out if he is.
Form profile
Made a winning reappearance in a bumper at Ludlow in October when scoring by nine lengths from Fort St Angelo.
Trainer says
He is a lovely horse who won his bumper and he will win hurdle races this season. He is a horse that jumps very well and will make a chaser as well. He has won over two miles so far but he has a pedigree that says he will stay.
Form profile
A 137-rated chaser. Made a winning debut over fences when beating Haiti Colours two lengths in a novices’ handicap chase at Chepstow (2m7½f) in October off a mark of 130 and put in another solid effort in a similar effort at Newbury this month when runner-up, beaten a length and three quarters, to Bowtogreatness off a mark of 135.
Trainer says
He was impressive when he won first time out at Chepstow but then a lot of people were saying he was lucky to win. The horse who was second has come out and won since and he then ran very well at Newbury when second to Bowtogreatness who has loads of experience. He showed his inexperience with a large jump at the last but he is a nice horse and would rather hope that he would run in the same sort of races that Chianti Classico ran in last year.
Form profile
A 150-rated chaser. Having his first run since a wind operation when fourth, beaten 15 ½ lengths, to Senior Chief in a handicap chase at Cheltenham (3m 1f) in October off a mark of 152. Ran another very solid race when fourth, beaten 12¼ lengths, to Abuffalosoldier in a handicap chase at Cheltenham (3m3½f) on Sunday.
Trainer says
He is in getting into the Veteran stage but has been an absolute stalwart for the stable. He ran at Cheltenham on his return and ran his customary blinder when finishing fourth under a huge weight at the course on Sunday.
Form profile
Winner of a point-to-point in Ireland in April. Finished fourth, beaten eight lengths, to John Barbour in a bumper at Uttoxeter on Saturday.
Trainer says
He was fourth in his bumper at Uttoxeter on Saturday and the race was nor run at a fast enough pace for him. No excuses but he showed he is a staying hurdler in the making and not a speed horse.
Form profile
A 122-rated chaser. Winner of both of his handicap chases this season. Scored by three and a quarter lengths from Maninsane at Huntingdon (2m 4f) in October off a mark of 116 and followed up with a four and a quarter length success from Passing Well in a similar event at Sandown (2m 4f) this month off his current mark.
Trainer says
He was very impressive when he won at Sandown recently. He was a horse who had issues last year and we had to work on a fibrillating heart and there was a possibility of retiring him. He has come back from a long break and has won both his starts. He is certainly a progressive individual and I hope he will move on from what he did the other day. We will have to see what the handicapper does with him.
Form profile
Unraced.
Trainer says
She makes her debut this week, all being well, at Ffos Las. She is a homebred and she is going to make a chaser. She is a huge mare and we are going to take our time with her but I do like her.
Form profile
Finished fifth, beaten four and three quarter lengths, to Stone’s Throw in a bumper at Southwell in May.
Trainer says
He is a horse I own and I like him. He has one run in a bumper and was very immature and backward. He has schooled over hurdles and he is two weeks away from running. I hope he will run very well.
Form profile
A 100-rated chaser and 119-rated hurdler. Pulled up in his only start for Alastair Ralph in a novices’ handicap chase at Hereford (3m 1f) in November of 2022.
Trainer says
He was a good horse for Oliver Sherwood and was sold for a good bit of money and is a Million In Mind horse. He has had two runs over fences and shown nothing and hasn’t run for two years and wants soft ground. I am pleased with what I have seen so far and I hope he is capable of winning a race off that mark.
Form profile
A 122-rated hurdler. Scored by a neck from Livin On Luco in a maiden hurdle at Chepstow (2m 3½f) in November of last year.
Trainer says
He is due to run at Chepstow if we get some rain. He is very much a chaser not a hurdler and he won a race over hurdles and a bumper the year before. He is a really nice horse and if things go right for him, he will win stacks of races.
Form profile
A 113-rated chaser. Off the mark over fences in a novices’ handicap chase at Lingfield (2m 4f) this month when beating Realisation a head.
Trainer says
He finally got his head in front at Lingfield last week. He has been a very unlucky horse and I hope he wins more races.
Form profile
A 130-rated hurdler. Gained her last success in a handicap hurdle at Warwick in May when scoring by a head from Red Dirt Road off a mark of 125.
Trainer says
She was a good horse two seasons ago when she won four races and she missed last season. She got jarred up when she ran at Cartmel. She is back in training and she will go novice chasing this season but it won’t be until after Christmas.
Form profile
A 95-rated chaser and hurdler. Last seen in action in a handicap chase at Chepstow (2m 7½f) in March of 2023 when fifth, beaten 12½ lengths, to Rock Of Star.
Trainer says
He is an interesting horse and a huge horse who has been given plenty of time. He has a good handicap mark and jumps and stays well. He is going to be a fun horse for the syndicate when he runs.
Form profile
Last seen in action when unseating his rider in a novices’ hurdle at Worcester (2m 7f) in October of last year on his only start of the season.
Trainer says
He had a bit of ability in point-to-points in Ireland and was disappointing when running over hurdles. He was running a big race when he made a mistake at Worcester last year and, unfortunately, injured himself. He has been given plenty of time. He should win a hurdle race but will be a nice chaser in a year’s time.
Form profile
Finished runner-up, beaten three and a quarter lengths, to Kingston Pride in a maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter (2m 4f) on his reappearance on Saturday.
Trainer says
He has had his issues but he has good form but he ran a blinder to finish second to what could be one of the best novice hurdlers in the country in Kingston Pride. He certainly has the ability if he is over all his problems.
Form profile
A 113-rated chaser. Made a winning debut on his chasing bow in a handicap at Worcester (2m7f) in October when scoring by three and a half lengths from Icaque De L’Isle off a mark of 103.
Trainer says
He was bought to be a chaser and showed a modicum of form over hurdles. He impressed when winning his chase at Worcester and goes to Ascot on Friday.
Form profile
A 116-rated chaser. Returning from a 147-day break when ninth, beaten 15 lengths, to Jagwar in a handicap chase at Bangor (2m 4½f) last week.
Trainer says
He ran at Bangor last week and it was a very respectable run in a race in which he was way out of his class. He is fine and hopefully he will win a race this season.

A 120-rated hurdler. Made a winning reappearance in a novices’ hurdle at Ffos Las (2m 6f) in May when beating Patriotik three quarters of a length.
Trainer says
He ran really well first time out at Exeter and was slightly disappointing last time at Chepstow but the race has worked out to be a really good race. He is more than capable of winning more races.
Form profile
Winner of his second point-to-point in Ireland in April.
Trainer says
He is an ex-Irish point-to-pointer and he will run in a bumper in the next two weeks. We will then make a decision as to whether he stays in bumpers or goes novice hurdling.

A 120-rated chaser. Finished third, beaten five and three quarter lengths, to Netywell in a handicap chase when last seen out at Newcastle (2m½f) in February off a mark of 121.
Trainer says
He is a stalwart in the yard and is about to be a veteran. He had a good season last year and won two races and he has to have soft ground. He is what he is.
Form profile
Finished third, beaten 10½ lengths, to Pure Steel in his only point-to-point in Ireland in March.
Trainer says
I like him and he is a horse who will improve in time but can hopefully win this season.
Form profile
A 98-rated chaser. Completed a hat trick over fences when scoring by four and a quarter lengths from Caeruleum in a novices’ handicap at Exeter (3m) in December off a mark of 94.
Trainer says
He has been a bit of a talking horse for us as everybody said he was a waste of time having in training and then he won three races last season. He has done his job but he is a little bit stronger and I think he will win races again.
Form profile
A 110-rated chaser. Finished runner-up, beaten four lengths, to Impatient in a handicap chase at Ffos Las (3m) this month.
Trainer says
I was really upset he got beat at Ffos Las last week. It wasn’t soft enough for him but he ran a grand race. He had his issues last year but I hope he can progress from what we saw last week.
Form profile
Finished third, beaten 13 lengths, to Tarras Wood in a maiden hurdle at Huntingdon (2m 4½f) in May.
Trainer says
He had won run over hurdles and finished third at Huntingdon last season. He is an ex-English point-to-pointer and he is three weeks away from running. I think he is a horse you will see best when he is handicapped.
Form profile
Finished fifth, beaten five and three quarters of a length, to Royal Infantry in a maiden hurdle at Chepstow (2m) this month.
Trainer says
He is a good English point-to-pointer and showed plenty of ability at home but has issues with his wind. He ran well at Chepstow the other day when finishing fifth in what was a good race. As soon as we get a handicap mark, we will go over fences with him.
Form profile
Finished only 10th of 14, beaten 12 lengths, to Block Rockin Beats in a bumper at Cheltenham (2m½f) in October for his new stable.
Trainer says
He was made favourite for the bumper at Cheltenham in October but I don’t know why and he is a soft ground horse. He jumps very well and two and a half miles over hurdles and I think he will be ok.
Form profile
A 114-rated hurdler. Finished runner-up, beaten half a length, to Getalead in a handicap hurdle at Warwick (2m 5f) this month off a mark of 110.
Trainer says
He has had a tough time and been badly handicapped and has been an unlucky horse. Just to show how unlucky he was, he jumped the last in front at Warwick and got collared. He was put up 4lb which makes it tough for him but he runs at Kempton in a couple of weeks’ time. He also has an entry at Warwick and I really hope he can win a race as he deserves to.

Unraced.
Trainer says
He is a three-year-old baby and a half-brother to Does He Know. We are just going to be patient with him.
Form profile
A 135-rated chaser. Winner of his first two handicap chases at Wetherby (2m 3½f) in November of last year when beating William Cody two lengths off a mark of 123 and followed up at Leicester (2m 4f) the following month when beating Mylesfromwicklow half a length off a mark of 130. Ran well when runner-up in two similar events afterwards.
Trainer says
He had a good season last year and won twice and was second twice. He should probably have won all four races really and he wants soft ground. We have been waiting a while to run him and he should win more races.
Form profile
A 125-rated hurdler. Winner of both his starts over hurdles this season - scored by three quarters of a length from Jurancon in a novice hurdle at Worcester (2m) in October and followed up with a four length win from Koapey at Ffos Las (2m) in November.
Trainer says
He is obviously a very talented individual but very lackadaisical with his jumping. Once he gets his act together, he is a horse that could go a long way.
Form profile
A 111-rated hurdler. Finished third, beaten 11 lengths, to Norley in a handicap hurdle at Ludlow (2m 5f) in April 2023 off a mark of 112 when last seen in action.
Trainer says
He had a year off which is quite disappointing as he has loads of ability. If we can keep him sound, he will win races.
Form profile
A 144-rated chaser. Several solid efforts over fences including when finishing third, beaten a length and three quarters, to Crebilly in a novices’ handicap chase at Exeter (2m 3f) in February off a mark of 145.
Trainer says
He has been very frustrating as he is a seriously talented individual. He has done nothing wrong and he is due to run at Haydock on Saturday if we get rain. He loves soft ground.
Form profile
A 150-rated chaser. Finished fourth, beaten seven and a half lengths, to stablemate Chianti Classico on his reappearance in a Grade 3 handicap chase at Ascot (3m) in November off a mark of 151.
Trainer says
He is a family favourite really and he is oldest horse in the yard. He will spend his winter going around Ascot and is half a stone better going to Ascot than any other racecourse. He goes back there for the December meeting.
Form profile
Not seen out since finishing last of 10, beaten 52 lengths, to Resplendent Grey when favourite for a bumper at Market Rasen in December 2022.
Trainer says
He has been an absolute disaster on the racecourse and has had one run and is now seven-years-old. I just pray he stays right and does something as he is a nice horse.

Unraced.
Trainer says
He is an interesting horse. He is the smallest horse in the yard and is due to run in a bumper in a couple of weeks’ time. He has an excellent pedigree and he can run really well in a bumper - he is what you would say a goer!
Form profile
An 82-rated chaser. Finished runner-up, beaten seven and a half lengths, to Eyed in a handicap chase at Market Rasen (2m5½f) last week.
Trainer says
He ran well first time over fences at Market Rasen last week and he can progress from that. All being well he can win a couple of races this season.
