A rating in the mid-to-low 160s has become customary of late for winners of this prestigious race, but that is below some of the giants of low and it is a division that could do with some fresh blood. That said, Bob Olinger has long had a lot of talent, and he put it altogether to lower the colours of the previous year’s winner Teahupoo.
The pace looked like being strong briefly early on but was in fact much more stop-start, picking up again before halfway then slackening again before a dash to the finish, the winner’s final 4f of 54.29s (110.3% finishing speed) one of the fastest of the entire meeting.
BOB OLINGER (h165 here, 159 previously) has long been talented while sometimes appearing a rather reluctant hero, but put it all together with his best effort yet at the grand old age of 10, steadied at the start and in last until halfway, creeping into things after 3 out before going into second between the last 2, responding well to lead just after the last and wandering for pressure but running on well. He is kept fresh these days and that has coincided with his making the first 2 on his last 7 starts now.
TEAHUPOO (h163 here and previously) went pretty close to making it back-to-back successes in this race and needs no excuses, going down only to a talented adversary who was on a real going day. He raced in mid-field and went well for a long way, easing into the lead between the last 2 and looking likely to win (went nearly as short as 2/1 on) but gradually overhauled by Bob Olinger despite running on well himself.
THE WALLPARK (h156 here, 150 previously) ran well but in slightly off-putting style, mid to rear when hampered at the 6th but soon back on an even keel, only to lose his place and look less than keen around 3 out, then improving wide to dispute the lead briefly between the last 2. A truer gallop than this might have helped.
ROCKY’S DIAMOND (h156 here, 150 previously) ran well, though he was well-positioned as things unfolded, disputing the lead a few times before leading for sure from 5 out until between the last 2 and coming back for more to an extent late on.
BUDDY ONE (h155 here and previously) lost his place and looked like finishing out the back after 3 out but rallied for a good effort.
FRANCISCAN ROCK (h147 here and previously) ran creditably but looked like finishing closer when going 4th between the last 2.
LUCKY PLACE (h142 here, 154 previously) shaped like a non-stayer, making a couple of mistakes and fading from prominence going to 2 out.
GOWEL ROAD (h131 here, 147 previously) had plenty on his plate but did not run well even in that context, leading until 5 out at a stop-start gallop and pestered at various stages, quickly beaten after the second-last.
CRAMBO (h? here, 153 previously) fell at the 6th, which is before halfway.
HOME BY THE LEE (h? here, 158 previously) was badly hampered and brought down at the 6th.
MYSTICAL POWER (h0 here, ? previously) went OK for a long way until eased and pulled up after 3 out, apparently amiss.
GA LAW (h0 here, ? previously) had run only once over hurdles in the previous 5 years and fared no better in this than he had then.
NEMEAN LION (h0 here, 151 previously) probably failed to stay, making a mistake 3 out and quickly beaten after another one at the next.
