Turffontein - Sat 4 Apr 2026

1 10:35 AM - Welcome To Champions Day Maiden Plate

The sole maiden race on the card begins the Champions Day betting bonanza and the first of three Jackpots. ONE OF THOSE DAYS was a fast-finishing 2nd over 1450m on the Inside track when resuming after a break. With further improvement expected switching to the Standside course, he will be hard to beat. PROPER was supported when making his debut in a lucrative maiden. He would have benefitted from the experience and was subsequently gelded so is open to any amount of improvement on his reappearance. MILLENNIUM WARRIOR and LANCE ALOT have shown enough to make their presence felt too.

2 11:05 AM - Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Nursery (Grade 2)

This 2yo Fillies' Grade 2 starts a sequence of nine consecutive feature races. Alan Greeff landed this prize last year with a Master Of My Fate filly and history could repeat itself if FATEFUL LOVE confirms the promise of her runaway debut victory. Fellow first-start scorers GET UP and GOOD DAY SUNSHINE warrant respect by the same token. GRISELDA and VOLCANIC HEAT have the form and experience to also play leading roles. QUEEN LEILA has shown enough to get a look in.

3 11:40 AM - Tab SA Nursery (Grade 2)

GIMME A VODKA sets the standard on the strength of his last-start 2nd in a 1000m Listed event. This extended trip will be more to his liking and any improvement should see him resume winning ways. NIGHTSHINE finished 2nd on debut behind that rival but is worse off at the weights so unlikely to turn the tables. Last-start scorer THE BRONX BULL is capable of landing a blow.

4 12:15 PM - Wilgerbosdrift Caradoc Gold Cup (Listed)

DAIMYO produced a career-best performance when dominating from the front in a 2400m Listed race last time and even under a penalty could be hard to peg back if adopting similar tactics. ALADDIN'S LAMP (2nd) and ENFLAME (3rd) renew rivalry on better weight terms so should feature prominently. The former has to prove his stamina over this extended trip, whereas the latter is unbeaten over track and trip. POETS WARRIOR is a proven stayer with solid form credentials so should have a role to play under the conditions. Veteran NEBRAAS, well-weighted TEO TORRIATTE and KISSING MACHINE can also earn.

5 12:50 PM - Tab Hawaii Stakes (Grade 2)

Grade 1 winners COSMIC SPEED and MAIN DEFENDER meet in a rematch of last year's race won by the latter, who is weighted to defend the title in his peak run after a lengthy layoff. However, both could be in better form heading into this year's renewal. TEXAS RED (3rd in 2025) fared better than those rivals in a recent 1600m Grade 1 and should have their measure again on better weight terms. ONE EYE ON VEGAS caught the eye when 4th in a 3yo Grade 1 over 1800m last time and reverting to this shorter trip should suit. He could improve sufficiently under bottom-weight 55.5kg to upstage his elders.

6 1:25 PM - Tab Empress Club Stakes (Grade 1) (Fillies And Mares)

Prestigious WFA race for fillies and mares. Multiple Grade 1-winner DOUBLE GRAND SLAM sets a lofty standard and will be hard to beat if anywhere near her best. She thwarted the fast-finishing RAINBOW LORIKEET when winning at the highest level over this trip in Cape Town 9 weeks ago. Those familiar foes will likely fight out the finish, provided the traveling hasn't taken too much out of them. RODEO DRIVE and CALLMEGETRIX are versatile performers with the form and experience at this level to have a say in the outcome. Younger fillies GOLDEN PALM and SCARLETT HEART aren't taken lightly either.

7 2:00 PM - Tab Computaform Sprint (Grade 1)

Ultra-competitive Grade 1 sprint renewal. WILLIAM ROBERTSON is back to defend his crown and likely to acquit himself admirably back over this distance. His last-start conqueror, ZIYASHA, should confirm the improvement of his recent 1160m victory with a full set of alumites unsurprisingly retained. BUFFALO STORM CODY and CONSTELLATION will make their presence felt back on the Highveld after finishing behind KINGDUNDEE in a Western Cape Grade 1. However, the sparingly raced latter is open to further improvement and could remain unbeaten over this distance. TRUTH and TAXI TO THE MOON aren't ignored.

8 2:35 PM - HKJC World Pool Premier's Champions Challenge (Grade 1)

Fascinating renewal laden with proven Grade 1 quality. Cape Town Met winner SEE IT AGAIN ran well in defeat when a fast-finishing 2nd in a recent 1600m Grade 1 on his Highveld reappearance. On that evidence, he will be hard to beat on these terms over this extended trip. FIRE ATTACK has a bit to find on that form and won't be done any favours from his No 11 draw but should acquit himself well in defence of his title. THE ULTIMATE KING and OLIVIA'S WAY are closely matched so shouldn't be far off. Recent Grade 1 winner GRAND EMPIRE and runner-up TRUST may pose a bigger threat in receipt of weight.

9 3:15 PM - Tab SA Derby (Grade 2) (3 Year Olds)

TITANS OF WAR, BELLEROPHON, CULTURATI and REIGN OF IMPACT have the experience over this sort of trip that should stand them in good stead. RADIO STAR wasn't disgraced in a 1800m Grade 1 and is open to improvement stretching out to this distance. However, that also applies to several others including Derby Trial winner DIOGENES, runner-up TEXAS MISSILE (3kg better off), MASTER SPY, COPPER EAGLE and TOMMY SHELBY. Rapidly improving filly CURIOUS GIRL was a wide-margin winner of the Oaks Trial in her first Highveld appearance. She could make history by defeating male opposition to win the SA Derby.

10 3:50 PM - Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks (Grade 2) (3 Year-Old Fillies)

HAZY DAZY fought back gamely to add the 2nd Leg of the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara to her success in Leg 1. On the evidence of that performance, as well as her earlier form over 2000m, this extended trip is unlikely to hold any fears so she is primed to complete the series cleansweep to cap a near-perfect preparation. CHARGE IT, DAISY JONES, LITTLEMISSMILLION and DRUMNADROCHIT are held on that form but could improve, venturing beyond 1800m for the first time, to pose more of a threat.

11 4:25 PM - 4Racing Mr 84 Handicap

STONEYWOOD showed his rivals a clean pair of heels when winning a similar course-and-distance event last month, and another forward showing is expected off a 5-point higher mark. However, both AFRICAN PRINCE (2nd) and XENOPHON (3rd) are weighted to turn the tables on that rival so will likely have roles to play. Class-droppers ESQUEVELLE and UMZINGELI WENYATHI should also be competitive at this level off their current ratings, especially the latter who could improve with alumites on all four feet for the first time. ANTONIO GAUDI and unexposed DANTE'S BOND are others to consider for exotics.

12 5:00 PM - Championship Finale 25 April Mr 74 Apprentice Handicap

KAMBATI made a winning handicap debut at this level over 1450m from a wide draw and he remains ahead of the handicapper, so it could pay to follow his progress under a lenient 4-point penalty. Fellow last-start scorer MONKEY PUZZLE fits a similar profile so should acquit himself competitively. Consistent class-dropper ZIP CODE is dangerous at this level, especially off a reduced mark, though a wide draw does his chances no favours. BRAVE VIKING, SPACE MISSION and BAY EMPIRE also have the means to make their presence felt.
