Michael Bell Stable Tour

The Fitzroy House trainer goes in search of further big-race success at Newcastle this weekend following Burdett Road's win in the Golden Gates at Royal Ascot.

Michael Bell enjoyed the perfect pick up to his season when Burdett Road powered home in the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the Fitzroy House trainer goes in search of further “hen’s teeth” at Newcastle this weekend.

Bell enjoyed success in the Northumberland Plate in 2007 when then 3lb-claimer Luke Morris guided Juniper Girl to victory in the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’, and he looks to the up-and-coming Billy Loughnane to repeat the act on board Adjuvant this time around. The New Bay gelding has put up two sterling efforts this term and was beaten only a neck by subsequent, and narrow, Duke Of Edinburgh runner-up HMS President at Newmarket, before scooting to a two-length victory from Pons Aelius at the same course in May.

The Newmarket trainer is confident that Adjuvant will enjoy the step up to two miles and an earlier experience of the all-weather at Chelmsford has his horse in just the right frame of mind heading into one of the most competitive handicaps of the season.

Michael said: “I am delighted with the current form of the horses, and although we haven’t had a two-year-old winner yet, which is unusual, they have run very well in defeat, and are just around the corner. The form of the yard is strong and to get a Royal Ascot winner, as everyone knows, is like getting hen’s teeth, so that was a real bonus. We are very happy.”

Michael kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about Adjuvant, Burdett Road and several others from his team that he hopes can ensure the season continues in its present vein.
