Tim Carroll

Tim has been among the winners in recent columns and hopes to continue the good run on Sha Tin's early morning Sunday card - live on Sky Sports Racing - now online.

Weekend racing from Hong Kong is at Sha Tin on Sunday morning with a 10-race card on both the turf and dirt getting underway at 5.00am – live on Sky Sports Racing. The headline race of the day is race five the Class 4 Yan Oi Tong Cup (7am) over 1 mile on the dirt.

My each-way (EW) selection on the card is BINGO who runs in race three, the Class 4 Lung Yat Handicap (6am) over 6 furlongs.

The John Moore-trained gelding is one of the most honest runners currently in Hong Kong. He likes to be ridden hot from the gates and sit on the front end throughout proceedings, and you can be pretty sure that it won’t be any different here.

The four-year-old might have drawn wide (gate 14) but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem as looking at the setup up of the race there doesn’t appear to be much pace. It looks like Bingo will have a little company from Brave Baby with the two of them the most probable pacemakers.

From here I see them having it pretty much their own way out in front and provided they keep it sensible, they could get away with some soft sectionals, and that being the case, the selection should have plenty in the locker late on.

Bingo goes up 8lb here, but he did win by nearly 3 lengths last time and Victor Wong maintains the partnership and once again, his 7lb claim will be valuable. It’s worth noting that Wong is the only rider to have won on the selection beside Joao Moreira, and the combination have performed strongly on all three occasions they have combined.

My best bet (NAP) on the card is I DO who runs in race six, the Class 4 Po Tin Handicap (7.35am) over 1 mile.

The Chris So-trained gelding is having his fourth run having put in his best effort when last sent out over 1 mile, so there is plenty to be confident about again here from what looks to be a perfect draw in gate three.

When last out he overcame a wide draw, which was far from ideal and whilst he was never going to catch the winner (who is very much in form), he finished a very commendable second and was well clear of third place.

Zac Purton, who has been on board for his last two starts, will be keen to get into a prominent position in a field where I can’t see them going too quick. With the 1 and 13 horses the most probable leaders, the race maps nicely for the selection who is drawn to box a seat in behind the speed in the perfect trailing position.

I Do (superbly named, being a son of So You Think), only goes up 2lb for his last performance, and with that run under his belt, in a race that should set up nicely for him, and with the Champion Jockey sticking solid, he looks one of the more likely winners on the card.

My next best (NB) on the card is I AM POWER who runs in race seven, the Class 3 Sam Shing Handicap (8.05am) over 5 furlongs.

The Peter Ho-trained gelding has had a decent first season in Hong Kong with two wins from four starts. For those of you who might recognise the name, I Am Power was previously trained by Michael O’Callaghan, for whom he won a maiden at Navan over this trip in 2017.

In a race that on paper suggests even by 5-furlong standards that they are going to belt along with any number of possible leaders, including the 2,3,4,6,7,8,9 or 12, I am persuaded that this could be won by something driving late with a fast finish, which is exactly how the selection has recorded his two wins to date.

Jockey Dylan Mo retains the ride and has an unbeaten record on the gelding winning both times they have combined. Being drawn in seven provides Mo with options, he can either try to get over to the grandstand where most like to head or keep it simple and just run straight.

Either way I expect to see him settle towards the rear of the field before charging late to hopefully pick up those on the speed and complete a hat-trick of wins for the combination.
