Expert Analysis

Reporter: James Flaherty

The first big meeting of the Classic generation and the older horses went the way of the former here as Constitution River emerged victorious, with the places also going to the younger horses. He saw it out better than the rest here in a race that was run at an extremely strong pace. That resulted in a slow-motion finish, highlighted by the winner’s final furlong of 14.00 seconds being the quickest in the field, and a finishing speed percentage for the contest of 94.36%. There was certainly no hiding place.

CONSTITUTION RIVER was always in his comfort zone despite the strong pace and travelled sweetly through the race. Initially settled in mid-division, he made ground stylishly early in the straight and got to the front just inside the penultimate furlong. From the furlong pole, it was just about keeping him going up the Sandown hill and he did that better than the rest as he extended to win by three lengths at the line.

A BOY NAMED SUSIE benefitted slightly from sitting further off the early pace, held up one from the rear in the opening furlong. He was also one that didn’t dip under 11 seconds through the second furlong. As a result, he had a little more to offer up the home straight as he moved by tiring horses. His own effort flattened out inside the final furlong and the winner was going away from him again at the line.

HAWK MOUNTAIN emerged with plenty of credit, especially considering he was the one of the three that pulled clear who was closest to the early speed. He even knocked out a 10.80 sectional in the second furlong, so definitely deserves an upgrade. He couldn’t go with the eventual winner in the final two furlongs, but he kept going all the way to the line.

SADDADD was held up early on and raced on the outer of A Boy Named Susie turning for home. He went wide into the straight and had to be nudged to close on those in front of him, before his effort faded from the two-furlong pole. He only got by Gethin when that rival started to paddle late on.

GETHIN was ultimately disappointing here and failed to build on his excellent run behind Ombudsman last time (admittedly getting weight). He did go quite hard early, but his finishing effort was very weak.

KING’S GAMBIT was a planned pacemaker but couldn’t get to the front and didn’t stay involved very long either.

FLUSHING MEADOWS led the frantic early pace before fading away.
