Expert Analysis
Like most recent Irish 2,000 Guineas, the form of the English 2,000 was important as the runner-up from Newmarket won in comfortable style. The third from Newmarket finished second here, while the fifth would have been a lot closer than sixth if avoiding trouble. The pace was decent as a pair more suited by shorter trips, Power Blue and Alparslan, made the running.
GSTAAD has never been out of the two in eight starts and won his second Group 1 in good style here, not needing to better the form he showed last time. Tracking the pace, he hit a brief flat spot after halfway before typically finding plenty to run out a clear winner. That tendency to come under pressure before most is part of his make-up and means that the stiff Ascot track suits him well, and he was an impressive winner of the Coventry last year.
DISTANT STORM was in first-time cheekpieces and narrowed the gap on the winner from Newmarket without ever looking like winning. He was briefly unbalanced two furlongs from home.
PACIFIC AVENUE tends to go forward but broke a little slowly here and had to race in rear. He made his challenge on the wing of the near side and kept on well into third, doing well in the circumstances.
POWER BLUE made the running here but has yet to convince with his stamina for this trip and is worth a try over shorter.
ALPARSLAN was another that went forward and failed to last home, leading until after the two-furlong pole and weakening late. He can do better down in trip and grade.
THESECRETADVERSARY, who had been fifth at Newmarket despite racing very keenly, settled better here but otherwise had little go right. Drawn one, he raced down the inner and met repeated trouble, not getting out until the final 100 yards. He would likely have been placed but for that and has made a fine start to the season.
BAMAKO BEACH was markedly up in grade and it showed as he was green throughout. He ran to a decent level while never getting competitive and will likely revert to a maiden next time.
TAKE CHARGE STAR, wearing a first time tongue-tie, travelled well in rear but didn’t pick up. He is worth a go over shorter trips but may not be the strongest finisher.
GO JUST DO IT attracted support at big prices and travelled as well as any for much of the race. His finishing effort was tame, and he finished well beaten but he may be a sprinter.
