Proclaiming that the Breeders’ Cup is my favourite racing event has proved divisive over this side of the pond - I have felt the wrath of the Ascot and Cheltenham (mostly) clans many a time! I enjoy those domestic festivals as much as the next stan, but sitting down in the evening to watch unfiltered Grade 1 excellence featuring most of the world’s most talented equine performers across two different surfaces is hard to trump. 

That being said, you will be glad to know that this column isn’t going to be about my affinity for the Breeders’ Cup. Far more interesting were the races themselves, especially given that we witnessed some of the most jaw-dropping accomplishments in the World Championships’ history from the beginning of Future Stars Friday to the Classic crescendo. Talking of the Classic, let’s begin there.

Initial thoughts were dominated by the disappointingly low turnout of just seven runners - the smallest field in Breeders’ Cup Classic history - but for all that the quantity didn’t suffice, the quality certainly did. Forever Young, champion in 2025, returned to become just the second horse to win the race in consecutive years, but he underwhelmed despite sitting a good prominent trip and SOVEREIGNTY scooted right on by to record a famous success for Godolphin and Bill Mott.

Jockey Junior Alvarado had the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner well positioned in fifth in the early stages as front-runner and stablemate Knightsbridge went through the early stages (2f/4f) in a tepid 23.54s/47.62s. That was far slower - around eight-and-a-quarter lengths - than the 23.04s/45.97s pitched by Contrary Thinking in the 2025 edition of the race. 

Sovereignty, who has regularly been outpaced while looking distracted down the backstraight in races this season, this time cruised effortlessly into contention. He was at his brilliant best and it was evident early in the race. When the pace slowed on the turn for home Sovereignty began to loom large, and an 11.81s penultimate furlong virtually put the race to bed with only the admirable The Puma matching his acceleration (11.82s). He was then put away before the line.

The final time of 2:00.36s was slower than the eased-down Flightline in 2022 (2:00.05s), Authentic in 2020 (1:59.6s), and Arrogate in 2016 (2:00.11s), making it the slowest edition of the race ever run at Keeneland. However, that can largely be put down to the small field, which consequently produced a slower early tempo, and the underperformance from last year’s champion, Forever Young.

A gorgeous mover with the perfect stride data to succeed in a Classic (24.99ft in length with a 2.26sps frequency), Sovereignty showed up to end his racing career on a high.

Can’t Help Falling In Love with Elvis

Sovereignty earned a 110 Beyer Speed Figure for his Classic success, which slotted in as the second-highest achieved at the 2026 Breeders’ Cup. It was only topped by T O ELVIS (112), who produced one of the best finishing kicks ever seen in the Sprint to beat Englishman in a thrilling edition of the race.

I quite liked the Japanese raider going into the contest with the theory that his Churchill Downs success over seven furlongs would stand him in good stead in a likely fast-run Sprint over six. It looked like a 21.5s opening quarter-mile was possible on paper, but when the sectional came up as 21.76s with short-priced favourite Englishman sitting a perfect trip in second my confidence waned somewhat.

Cherie DeVaux’s market leader kicked on the hometurn and put distance between himself and the rest, only for T O Elvis to put in incredible 11.25s (2f-1f) and 11.52s (1f-line) final furlongs to run down the pacesetter for an astounding victory. The long-striding (26.19ft) colt has the rare talent to sustain his top speed deep into a race run at a good gallop. 

His 11.52s final furlong was the quickest posted in any dirt race across the two days (as shown above), and his final time of 1:08.2s matched Bentornato’s in this race at Del Mar 12 months ago. However, the longer straight at Keeneland usually hinders Sprint clockings so he undoubtedly put in a better display. Unsurprisingly, T O Elvis beat the times posted by Elite Power (2022), Whitmore (2020) and Runhappy (2015) in the three previous editions of the race at this venue.

Monica and Cellini among others to catch the eye

LIBERTANGO and SUN GODDESS were the European stars on show on Future Stars Friday with impressive victories in the Juvenile Turf Sprint and Juvenile Fillies Turf, respectively. HAFFNER added to Aidan O’Brien’s haul under a great ride in the Juvenile Turf. 

HUGHES took out the Juvenile for Bob Baffert with a solid, if not sparkling, all-round effort. While EMPHATIC led them a merry dance in the Juvenile Fillies. She looked like a future star but was always well-positioned in a race that featured a pace lull on the hometurn. Her 12.55s split between the 3f-2f pole put the race to bed, but the finishing effort of Miss Monica (11.9s final furlong) shouldn’t be overlooked.

On Saturday, WAYS AND MEANS ended her career with a one-sided success in the Filly & Mare Sprint, while KATHYNMARISSA and DETERMINISTIC upset the European shippers in the Filly & Mare Turf and Mile, respectively. 

FURTHER ADO took out a weak Dirt Mile before BENVENUTO CELLINI routed them in the Turf with a mind-boggling turn of foot (41.07mph, 11.06s final furlong).

I will save the final word for BACIO (Turf Sprint). He is undoubtedly a very fast horse - potentially the fastest thoroughbred in the world - but his two furlongs of 11.62s (seventh-fastest in the race) and 12.38s (eighth-fastest) firmly suggest that he five-and-a-half furlongs stretches his stamina even in victory. He is vulnerable in similar races moving forward.
