It's been some time since Friendly Soul's win in the Prix de l'Opera but connections persist and she will undoubtedly be a threat to all if returning at anywhere near her best. However, although disappointing at Cork last month, WEMIGHTAKEDLONGWAY might be worth keeping on side. The daughter of Australia held her own at the highest level for much of last year and is expected to do considerably better with that effort under her belt. Cheshire Dancer could go well at a price.
LANGSTONE shrugged off a penalty to follow up his Doncaster triumph at Kempton and looks a real player now sent handicapping. Clive Cox has his string in excellent order and although this is wide open, his Mayson gelding gets the vote. Wetherby novice winner Princling should go well, as should the progressive Laureate Crown. Lighting Thunder was workmanlike when landing the odds at Nottingham but he could take a step forward in first-time cheekpieces, while others worth considering include Jamestown and Blue Courvoisier.
Things didn't work out for VENETIAN SUN in the 1000 Guineas, but Karl Burke's filly can show her class back at 6f. Last year's Prix Morny heroine has 4lb and upwards in hand on official ratings and, in receipt of weight from all barring Spicy Marg, she can get back into the winner's circle. Coppull had Division half a length in arrears when landing the Commonwealth Cup Trial, but the latter did well to finish as close as he did after rearing at the start. Brussels was further back in sixth, but it would be unwise to rule out Aidan O'Brien's colt.
Night Raider has to be respected following his Palace House victory and another good run can be expected. That said, marginal preference is for ASFOORA, who was a well-held 10th at Newmarket. The Australian mare has had a different prep to the last couple of seasons and may have needed that outing. She is obviously top-class when at her best and it would be no surprise to see her bounce back. American Affair is another Group 1 winner who could take a step forward, while Shagraan and Mgheera are also noted.
HERMETIC displayed plenty of promise when filling fourth place at York on his debut for these connections 10 days ago. With improvement likely, the four-year-old just tops the shortlist in a wide-open event. Pole Star has run well in defeat on both starts this season and is likely to be in the mix once again, as is Humble Spark. Prydwen has plenty of weight to carry but is another with strong claims.
Noble Vow opened his account at the seventh time of asking when landing a maiden at Bath recently. The penny may finally be dropping for Richard Hannon's colt, but reverting to handicap company does demand more so it may pay to look elsewhere. BINTARYANA tops the bill after supplementing a Nottingham triumph with a good second at Southwell and an official rating of 75 looks workable. The returning Akirra is feared most on the back of being gelded.
Having made a satisfactory return to action when seventh in the Lincoln at Doncaster, ETERNAL FORCE makes plenty of appeal dropping in class. This is just the ninth outing for the William Haggas-trained four-year-old and there should be better days ahead. Hot Cash arrives on the back of a near-miss at Thirsk and he may serve the most resistance to the selection, ahead of God Of War.
WEMIGHTAKEDLONGWAY has a poor reappearance in the Noblesse Stakes to overcome, but her overall profile still demands respect given she is a Group 3 winner and has mixed it at the highest level, including placing in Group 1 company. Friendly Soul brings the standout form after her impressive Prix de l’Opera success and, despite returning from a lengthy absence, looks very capable if ready to roll. Sparks Fly continues to perform consistently in strong company and should once again give a good account at this level, where she has already won four times.
Clive Cox has a strong recent record in this race and LANGSTONE looks an interesting handicap debutant after completing a double in good style at Kempton last time. Crest Of Fire created a huge impression when bolting up by 10 lengths in a maiden at Southwell on his most recent effort and rates a major player if able to reproduce that level back on turf. Princling also enters calculations after a smooth success to open his account on the third time of asking at Wetherby and remains open to plenty of improvement now in handicap company.
Dropping back to sprinting could be the key for VENETIAN SUN, who failed to see out the mile in the 1000 Guineas but brings top-class juvenile form into this and should be much more at home over 6f while also recieving that handy fillies' allowance from the colts. Coppull arrives on the back of a Group 3 success at Ascot and looks sure to make another bold bid. Brussels was slightly disappointing on his return in the Commonwealth Cup Trial when five lengths behind today's rival, but remains a colt with considerable potential and could take a sizeable step forward here.
NIGHT RAIDER bounced back to his best when landing the Palace House Stakes at HQ on reappearance and, with conditions again likely to suit a strong gallop, he looks a major player to follow up if things fall his way. Shagraan arrives in consistent form, placing on all of his last four starts and winning twice, and should be in the thick of things again after following home today's main rival by a few lenghts at Newmarket last time. Asfoora is a high-class sprinter on her day and, despite a below-par seasonal return in the Palace House, is entitled to come on for that effort and remains very much one to note.
POLE STAR continues to run consistently well in staying handicaps and put in a solid performance when third off this mark over 14f at Newmarket last time. With this step back up in trip likely to suit, he looks capable of being competitive once again. Prydwen is a key player on the back of a solid Group 2 effort in Germany and, with George Scott having won this race last year, he commands major respect back on home soil with a notable jockey booking in Oisin Murphy. Hermetic made a respectable start to his UK campaign when fourth at York and could take another step forward with that initial run behind him.
BINTARYANA arrives on the back of a solid effort in defeat and looks the type to do better now switched to handicap company, with her overall form in three starts already looking reliable, including a victory in a maiden at Nottingham two runs ago. Akirra has been largely consistent in his six career starts, winning at Wolverhampton on his penultimate out, and could be dangerous on reappearance if settling better. Noble Vow made a taking impression to open his account in a maiden and is clearly one to note again back in handicap company.
GOD OF WAR shaped better when runner-up in the Earl Grosvenor Handicap at Chester last time and, now a couple of pounds below his last winning mark, looks well capable of getting involved in a competitive mile with the in-form Rossa Ryan on board. Eternal Force failed to complete the four-timer when beaten by a few lengths at Doncaster on his latest showing, but has enough ability to bounce back if putting his best foot forward from what could be a stiff mark. Stem arrives in better form than his latest run at Newbury suggests and could prove dangerous if reproducing his earlier Ascot and Newbury efforts.
