Expert Analysis

Reporter: James Flaherty

This Group 2 contest for the juveniles has produced plenty of good horses in recent years. Blue Point, Minzaal and Lake Forest are three in the last ten years that went on to achieve success at the highest level in open company after their juvenile campaigns. This year’s renewal was the slowest in that period, but it was also the only one in that period to be run on ground softer than good. An even pace means we probably got a true result on the day, as there were no hard luck stories either. The winner, Arapaho Gold, and the runner-up Final objective put a little bit of distance between themselves and the rest in the final 100 yards.

ARAPAHO GOLD is really finding his feet now. His listed win last time was a big step up on his maiden and novice wins, but this took his form to another level. He tracked the leaders early but was pulled out to challenge inside the two-furlong pole and his response was impressive. He still isn’t the finished article, but he continues to improve with each run, and he is entitled to a shot at a Group 1 contest now.

FINAL OBJECTIVE matched or marginally bettered the winner in each furlong bar the first on the sectionals. He came from slightly further back, and while it is hard to say it cost him as he wasn’t gaining late on, it might have been interesting if he was ridden closer to the pace. He only broke his maiden at Thirsk a week ago (at the fourth attempt), which raises some doubt about the strength of the form.

HELL OF A SPIN sat just behind the leader through the first half of the race. He challenged upsides inside the final two furlongs but was passed on either side by the first and second inside the final furlong and was unable to go with them close home.

AGAMEMNON led early here and took the field to the two-furlong pole before being joined by Hell Of A Spin. Once passed, he struggled to maintain his effort and faded inside the final furlong.

ADAAY OF SCARLETT was probably a little below his best here. He has been really consistent, but I don’t think this was as good as recent efforts. He ran on late, but never really threatened to get involved this time.

MUSSAB was held up off the pace and even though he went by beaten horses late on he never really landed a blow.

MATTEO was prominent through the first half of the race but dropped out rather quickly soon after the two-furlong marker.

MARCO POLO disappointed after being very well backed. He was keen, but even still not enough to justify the lack of finishing effort, particularly in the final furlong.

NEVER ENOUGH was last for most of the contest until he passed one rival in the closing stages.

RONSON raced in midfield on the near side of the group but struggled early and was beaten soon after halfway.
