Miss Lady Grace was eighth at Southwell but that was her first start in three months and, on the return to turf, she could surprise a few. Canvas carries a 5lb penalty after a three-and-a-half-length victory at Wolverhampton and has an even better record on grass, but the nod goes the way of WEFFAAG. The Havana Grey colt ran on well to win over 7f at Newcastle and a mark of 79 may underestimate him ahead of his handicap debut for a trainer who loves a winner here.
The draw could prove significant in this big-field mile handicap, with WEFFAAG an interesting contender from stall three, a position that can be advantageous in these contests at this track. He opened his account in a Newcastle maiden by a neck on his first start after a wind operation last time, having shown plenty of promise in a short career, and makes his handicap debut for the in-form William Haggas, who has an excellent record here. Canvas has been revitalised by the addition of cheekpieces and returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion at Wolverhampton last time, scoring by three and a half lengths off a five-pound lower mark. The revised rating and wide draw in stall 19 are concerns, but he remains capable of going well. Nyman is another in good form, having won by a length and a half at Redcar last time off a five-pound lower mark, and he could still be ahead of the handicapper if maintaining that progress.
