An ultra-competitive staying handicap to draw the 2024/2025 jumps season to a close, even more so with a host of Willie Mullins-trained horses on show as he attempted to win the British trainers’ title (which he succeeded in doing while saddling “only” the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th here). It was run at a marathon trip but was not a thorough test of stamina in other respects, the ground no softer than “good” and a winner’s final 4f of 56.64s prompting a 109.2% finishing speed.
RESPLENDENT GREY (c148 here, 144 previously) had shaped well 2 or 3 times, including in strong races at Cheltenham the last twice, and came good at a trip that suits him, never far away and staying on well to lead on the run-in. He is probably a horse for Nationals and other good staying handicap chases rather than anything better.
LOMBRON (c147+ here, 141 previously) has age on his side and could well win a big handicap at some point, possibly unlucky not to do so here as a mistake 5 out meant his jockey lost her stirrup briefly. He recovered remarkably quickly and led going best after 2 out (touched about evens in running) only to edge right and be headed on the run-in. He had shown pace as much as stamina previously and should be highly effective at around 3m.
HIGH CLASS HERO (c151 here, 147 previously) matched his hurdling form and ran his best race over fences, still short of experience and possibly capable of better still.
SPANISH HARLEM (c143 here, 135 previously) was 6 lb out of the handicap and ran really well, in the firing line most of the way. He is still a maiden over fences but that surely will not remain the case.
GRANGECLARE WEST (c166 here and previously) matched the form of his Irish Gold Cup second and Grand National third (off a 5 lb lower mark than this), 9th at halfway and sticking to his task.
