Verdict

Venetian Sun didn't get home in the 1000 Guineas before showcasing her talent when dropped to 6f with an explosive success in the Sandy Lane. She backed that performance up when just holding on in the Commonwealth Cup, although connections have issued a warning about her potentially being in season this week, which tempers enthusiasm on her first run against her elders. ALMERAQ got up on the line to deny Satono Reve in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes and there is every chance that form can be confirmed. It was a fine training performance from William Haggas to get the four-year-old back after a horror fall at York last September and he may have further improvement to come, especially given the fact he is so lightly raced for a sprinter. Wokingham hero Double Rush is unbeaten in three starts since joining Andrew Balding and deserves his chance at this level.

A strong renewal with a number of Royal Ascot winners competing. Venetian Sun failed to stay 1m in the Guineas here earlier in the year but looked an exciting young sprinter when landing the Commonwealth Cup last time. This fast 6f should suit and getting plenty of weight from her rivals she holds strong claims. Mission Central benefitted from an overly strong pace when getting up late in the King Charles II and he's won over 6f in the past so should be ideally suited by this test. Almeraq is another who got up late in the Jubilee and he remains lightly raced for his age. However he has probably reached his plateau and he was helped by the race developing early at Ascot. That disadvantaged SATONO REVE who got racing a long way out and was caught on the post. This sharper track will help the Japanese Grade 1 winner and he can gain some compensation for a couple of narrow defeats in the UK. Wokingham winner Double Rush has been on a rapid upward trajectory for his new stable and can't be dismissed either despite this significant step up in class.
