Expert Analysis

Reporter: Simon Rowlands

Not an especially strong Group 2 as these things go, the form shown by the principals smart at best and a length or two behind what is likely to be needed to win a race like the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, the time also not comparing all that well with the ordinary handicap at the same distance later on the card. Beauty Inspire played up in his stall and was withdrawn, the delay possibly leading to a ragged start for a couple who took part.

EL CABALLO (113 here, 110 previously) improved further to gain his sixth win in a row, though there was again not obviously much to spare and even stiffer tests presumably lie ahead. He tracked the pace on the near side, was niggled before halfway but ran on to lead with more than 1f to go then was ridden out.

FLAMING RIB (112 here and previously), who had beaten the Temple Stakes winner King’s Lynn the time before, ran at least as well here and is proving smart as well as reliable, leading/disputing the lead in the centre, under pressure with more than 1f to go, but coming again at the death despite briefly edging right.

WINGS OF WAR (106 here, 109 previously) was a bit better than the result in first-time cheekpieces, likely to have been close to the first two had things panned out differently, held up and travelling comfortably, asked for his effort 2f out and running on late despite not having a lot of room in which to manoeuvre at one stage.

GO BEARS GO (103+ here, 111 previously) should be back to his best next time, doing well considering how badly he stumbled at the start, on the back foot thereafter but making headway before his run rather petered out near the end.

CATURRA (103 here, 108 previously) had run respectably in France the time before and did so again, travelling quite well in mid-field and a bit short of room late on when unable to quicken.

TIPPY TOES (87 here, 98 previously) was better than the result, rearing and slowly away but getting back in touch before edging left and finding no extra.

EDWARD CORNELIUS (89 here, 93 previously) ran about as well as could be expected while out of his depth, showing early speed.

EVER GIVEN (82 here, 107 previously) needed to find more at this level but was rather disappointing all told, short of room at one point but finding little thereafter.

GIS A SUB (81 here, 105 previously) has yet to show he is as good as he was at two.

VERTIGINOUS (65 here, 101 previously) showed plenty of speed before weakening and eased.
