A race which needed 1 or 2 of the horses to step forward if it was to match the usual standard, and that indeed happened, Aomori City showing smart form in overcoming trouble to prevail comfortably in the end. The time was the fastest this century, a reflection of ground that was considerably quicker than the “good” given officially (course records were broken and nearly broken later on the card). The winner’s final 2f went by in 23.78s for a close-to-par 101.7% finishing speed: those behind the first 2 finished slowly to one degree or another.
AOMORI CITY (110+ here, 101+ previously) had still looked inexperienced behind Whistlejacket at Newmarket and built further on that at a trip that suited him better, putting up a smart performance, close to the best by a juvenile in Europe to this stage. He tracked the pace, was slightly hampered after a couple of furlongs, made headway up the inner going well then had to wait for a run in the penultimate 1f, switched and quickening well to lead with 150 yards to go, soon on top for just a couple of cracks with the whip. He seems very likely to stay 8f and remains with potential.
WOLF OF BADENOCH (105+ here, 84+ previously) did well in the end to get second having seemed markedly green when in last and scrubbed along mid-race (had been steadied into that position after start), going on well in the final 1f but never nearer. 8f should suit him and he can win more races, quite possibly good ones with a bit more progress.
COOL HOOF LUKE (100 here and previously) ran at least as well as he had in the Coventry (the form of which is not working out especially well), wide early and leading after 2f travelling comfortably, edging left and headed under pressure just inside the final 1f. He is not in need of further at present.
TIGER MASK (100 here, 91 previously) moved forward plenty from the form of his previous 3 runs, leading early and close up until no extra in the final 1f. He is not in need of further just now.
AN OUTLAW’S GRACE (91 here, 101 previously) disappointed a bit, having shown useful form in France the time before, though things did not entirely go his way. Slowly away, he was short of room after a couple of furlongs but made headway out wide before petering out late on. He should stay this far.
ELECTROLYTE (88 here, 102 previously) ran poorly in the end at this longer trip, slightly hampered after a couple of furlongs but making some headway before finding little late on.
ARABIAN SUN (85 here, 86 previously) faced a stiff task and dropped away late on, not discredited in the circumstances.
