Expert Analysis

Reporter: Simon Rowlands

A race that has turned up the odd head-scratching result in recent years, and this may be another of them, for all that the winner deserves credit for improved and very smart form. He was one of 3 who went fast early, but got a large break on the remainder as a result, and in his case never came back, his 24.16s for the final 2f (99.3% finishing speed where par is well over 100 on this track) showing he was slowing in relative terms late. The overall time was nearly 2.0s for the 2yos in the Vintage Stakes. Kinross wasgoing for his 3rd win in this but was withdrawn at the start due to being kicked by last year’s winner, Audience.

WITNESS STAND (119 here, 112 previously) had a listed win at Newbury last year which appeared smart, but this bettered even that, as he raced close to the strong pace, in 3rd by halfway, improving to lead 2f out and soon 3 lengths clear, holding on well. He proved inconsistent last year but is with different trainers now.

LAKE FOREST (111 here, 117 previously) ran respectably and in by-now-customary style, in rear and well off the strong pace, pushed along by halfway but improving 2f out and going 2nd inside the final 1f. He has not quite reproduced his 1500m Golden Eagle win in 4 runs this term.

AUDIENCE (104+ here, 124? previously) has somehow avoided a Timeform squiggle despite his form oscillating wildly. The winner of this last year, he raced close up traveling well despite the strong pace was manoeuvred wide in the home straight but hung fire for quite some time before rallying a bit near the finish.

QUINAULT (104+ here, 112 previously) can be marked up and remains in good heart, the one who set the strong pace and folding late on.

JONQUIL (98 here, 114 previously) never got into it having been held up and failed to impress by hanging right in the penultimate 1f when just beginning to make some headway.

ALYANAABI (89 here, 110 previously) has now run 3 poorish races since his Haydock reappearance win.

IBERIAN (85 here, 107 previously)

NOSTRUM (82 here, ? previously)

INTRUSIVELY (0 here, 90 previously)

NOBLE CHAMPION (0 here, 117 previously) was pulled up early with his jockey seeming to think he was amiss.
