Another strong Commonwealth Cup, if not up to the very high level set in 2017, when Caravaggio beat Harry Angel and Blue Point, and it took a decidedly smart effort from the winner to score ultimately fairly readily. It was run at a sound pace, the winner’s finishing speed % a very-close-to-par 100. Those in stalls 1 to 7 raced far side, 15 and up (bar 19) nearer stand side, and the rest in the centre, but there was probably nothing in it.
PERFECT POWER (116 here, 115 previously) has turned out pretty much as expected, a smart colt who is equally effective at a well-run/stiff 6f as at 7f, but who probably failed to stay 8f in the Guineas. He needed most of this trip to get up on the prevailing good to firm ground, towards the rear on the far side and niggled along before making headway 2f out, leading with 120 yards to go despite edging left. The British-trained sprinters are not a great bunch, but he may have to run better still to follow up in the July Cup.
FLAMING RIB (112 here and previously) continues to run well, close up and edging ahead mid-race, sticking to his guns admirably.
FLOTUS (107 here, 111 previously) was close to the form she showed when second to Tenebrism in the Cheveley Park last year, not seeing it out quite as well as the two ahead of her, never far away and leading in the penultimate 1f.
CADAMOSTO (108 here, 104 previously) ran his best race in first-time blinkers while failing to impress with his finishing effort, tracking the pace and travelling well, briefly looking like he might come through but edging right and finding little. This was, nonetheless, a very useful effort.
MIRAMAR (101 here, 105 previously) was close to the form she had shown in winning a Group 3 at Chantilly the time before, close up most of the way and keeping on.
EHRAZ (104 here, 107 previously) has promised rather more than he has delivered to date, though this was another useful effort, slowly into his stride and behind but making promising headway on the far side in the penultimate 1f before finding little.
HALA HALA ATHMANI (100 here, 97 previously) ran her best race and promised more yet, making late headway but never nearer, still looking green under pressure.
TIBER FLOW (101 here, 107 previously) was not discredited, close enough but unable to quicken.
ZAIN CLAUDETTE (93 here, 106 previously) showed a bit on what was her reappearance, in touch until the penultimate 1f.
GO BEARS GO (93 here, 111 previously) was disappointing, finding little after racing in the front rank. He has been consistent overall, and this may just prove to be a blip.
SAM MAXIMUS (92 here, 102 previously) shapes as though a bit further may help now.
WINGS OF WAR (83 here, 108 previously) failed to confirm last-time promise despite having every chance.
SACRED BRIDGE (78 here, 101 previously) probably did not achieve a whole lot in beating Ladies Church (unplaced in a handicap during the week) at Cork the time before but disappointed even so.
RIZG (81 here, 101 previously) went backwards instead of forwards for the application of blinkers.
GIS A SUB (80 here, 105? previously) showed pretty good speed to lead in first-time blinkers but dropped away tamely.
BOONIE (77 here, 98 previously) shaped as if he will prove best at 5f.
SLIPSTREAM (77 here, ? previously), a Group 3 and listed winner in the US, failed to do himself justice.
EL CABALLO (74 here, 112 previously) ran his first poor race, and some, never near the front rank.
HIERARCHY (0 here, 107 previously) ran poorly for no obvious reason.
TWILIGHT JET (0 here, 111 previously) ran as if amiss, and was later reported to have an unsatisfactory scope.
