Scholfield eyeing more riches with prolific Bollin Thou

First-season trainer also has a Cheltenham runner in St Irene.

Nick Scholfield is waiting on the handicapper before deciding the path for his Bollin Thou after he secured his fifth successive victory at Fontwell.

The eight-year-old is responsible for five of Scholfield’s 14 winners in his first season as a trainer.

All five have come in the hands of champion jockey Sean Bowen and Scholfield will bide his time as he considers a future chasing career for the gelding, whose rating has risen 33lb since his first victory at Uttoxexter on New Year’s Eve.

Scholfield said: “He’s been a star for the yard. Any horse that wins that number of races has done very well and he’s been there from the start. He’s come out of the Fontwell race great and we’ll look to run him again, but we’ll see what the handicapper does on Tuesday.

“He seems to have a great bond with Sean Bowen and they seem to gel together. We’ll be guided by the horse, check that he’s OK.

“Once he tells us he’s had enough races we’ll obviously give him a break. As it stands now there’s no big aims and we’re obviously looking at next year. We might go chasing with him next year so we’ve got a lot to look forward to next season as well.”

Meanwhile, Scholfield is not feeling any pressure with St Irene ahead of the Cheltenham Festival as she finalises her preparations for the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.

She was second on her stable debut before going on to win well at Wincanton and follow that up with another impressive win in a Listed race at Taunton.

That bought her a chance to strut her stuff at Prestbury Park and she is a general 25-1 shot in her first attempt at graded level.

Scholfield added: “She’s great. She’s worked recently and all systems go to go to Cheltenham on the Thursday. She’s in great form. She had a mini break after her Listed win. She had a good gallop last week.

“She’ll go into the race very fit. She’ll go into the race as the underdog and if we can just have a nice run around there and look forward to that. We’re going there with no expectations and she’ll go there fit and well.”
