With the PGR Regency and Coral Sussex Cup just a week away, trial stakes feature on an all-Open race card at Hove on Saturday night, while Monmore’s evening programme is also Open-race top-heavy.

YOUGO FREDDIE (2) (each-way) will be a square price in Division C (19.26) of the Sussex Cup Trial Stakes, but he is worth a speculative interest after getting touched out in a troubled run over the same course and distance last week. Seamus Cahill’s charge finished in front of Sussex Cyclone (4) on that occasion and also holds Zenith Sultan (3) on a meeting from a few weeks earlier.

Drawn alongside slow-starter Slaneyside Ross (1), the selection can control the inside line here, and while beating Behemoth (6) - who has plenty in hand based on a win here in April - won’t be easy, Yougo Freddie (2) can certainly ruffle a few feathers.

SMOKESTACK SAXON (3) failed to land skinny odds in a recent local Category 3 final, but he is fancied to make amends in the Coral Saturday Night 500 Puppies (18.06). Twice a winner from three career starts, Jason Heath’s October whelp has been equally effective both on and off the pace, and a sharp sprint trial suggests he is worthy of another chance.

Alright Bullet (1) would be a huge threat if repeating his previous rapid-fire win when never seeing a rival from this box last month, but he has enjoyed little luck either before or after that run and so can be taken on here.

ZENITH IMMINENT (2), a PGR Kent Derby finalist last year, can make an immediate impact on his first race since December for Richard Rees in the Coral Saturday Night 500 Standard Division B (21.26).

Capable of going well fresh, while his recent trials are someway short of a 2923 Maiden competition victory here last autumn, they still sit on a par with what the opposition have been doing, so he should be very competitive.
