Stable Tour Quotes
Charlie Johnston (19 June 2023): "Plenty has been said about him already and we only have to wait until Thursday now for the Gold Cup. We have been crossing the days off one by one and he had a career-ending injury two years ago now and we are sort of on a wing and a prayer now. Sadly, tendon injuries don’t heal completely and go away - they are always there in the background lurking like a dark cloud but touch wood we are on track. With any horse you don’t go into the red zone at home but when you have had an injury like he has we have been treading a very fine line. We have been doing as much work as we can to have him 100 per cent without taking any undue risks at home. He has a routine that I can guarantee no other horse in the country has. First thing in the morning he swims 20 laps of our Equine pool, then goes on the walker for 45 minutes to dry off, then gets ridden second lot and Joe Fanning comes in five days a week to ride him. When Subjectivist gets back from exercise, he stands in ice boots for half an hour whilst he is having his hay. He then stands in bubble boots for half an hour after that then goes on the water walker for an hour after that. He is doing something from first lot to last lot through the morning with every huge amount of cold-water therapy and is back in ice boots and bubble boots at evening stables. We are doing everything we can and in most horses who have his injury would have been retired but because of who he is and what he is we have given it a go. He has a huge personality, great constitution and is a nice horse to be around and a very tough horse. Two years ago, this horse was the best stayer in the world and he has reached a level in this race which I think nothing in the race has come close too. Broome is a very good mile and a half horse but in terms of two and a half miles form and potential Subjectivist is in a different stratosphere to everything else in the race. In that regards I not concerned about anything in the race about the opposition. My concern is how close we can get Subjectivist to how he was two years ago. I have accepted that because of his injury that he will never be exactly 100 per cent again but he doesn’t need to be to beat these and it’s how close we can get him to 100 per cent. We are doing everything we can."
Mark Johnston (14 June 2021): "He was obviously very impressive in Dubai and it was a fantastic win out there. He did have a setback in the immediate 24 hours after Dubai and that made our minds up for us that we were coming straight to Royal Ascot. I was never concerned about that as he showed in Dubai that we can have him ready at home and in the form of his life. Joe has been in to sit on him the last two Saturdays and is very happy with him and he looks in great order. We are basically in the same position as we were a week out from Dubai. We are under no illusions that the standard that Stradivarius sets but we feel this is the best horse we have sent to tackle him, and he is going to have to be as everything we have thrown at him the past two years has come up a bit short. "
Mark Johnston (27 July 2020): "Subjectivist might possibly run in the Gordon Stakes. He won the Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton a couple of weeks ago and this had been the plan since. I am now slightly getting cold feet because it looks a tougher renewal of the Gordon than come sometimes be the case. English King, Khalifa Sat and may be Mogul are going to go there so a lot of the horses in the Derby are coming here. If we don’t like it, we might sit tight and wait for March Stakes. He is Sir Ron Priestley’s little brother and we are campaigning him towards the St Leger as well. He is certainly following in the same direction and he has a very successful first three runs of the year and, hopefully, can continue building in that direction."
Mark Johnston (12 June 2020): "He will be having his first run of the year in the King George V Handicap and he is a half-brother to Sir Ron Priestley and if he can make the same improvement from two to three that his brother did then he could still be feasibly handicapped."
