Stable Tour Quotes
Joe Tizzard (12 October 2022): "We are going to head up to Aintree for the Sefton with him. He jumped great in the Grand National last year and didn’t quite get the trip but back over two miles and five over those big fences is right up his street. There is then a month to the Becher so he could have a couple of runs after then go for the Grand National again. If it looks like he didn’t enjoy the National fences a second time, then we could look at veterans’ chases as he’s a ten-year-old now and he has dropped to a mark of 150."
Colin Tizzard (04 April 2022): "He seems very well, and he didn’t get a very good run in the UItima Handicap Chase at Cheltenham. He got into a little bit of a box and didn’t get a clear run, but he galloped all the way through the line. He jumped the National style fences at David Pipe’s exceptionally well the other day and the boys are keen to have a go with him. If he gets into a bit of rhythm on some decent ground, I could see him giving Harry Cobden a real good ride. It might take something like the National to revitalises him. His form at Ascot was nearly back as good as any of his form so the engine it still there - it’s a bit hit and miss - and on his day he is still a good horse. A race like the National might make or break him but if he loves it and gets into a nice rhythm then he is a nice horse on his day."
Colin Tizzard (02 March 2022): "He has got very ground dependent as he has got older. Robbie Power has always said he wants good ground as he is a Flemensfirth. You could see at Ascot after the third fence he was hating the ground. He didn’t have a hard race. He has dropped to 155 so we are going to run him in the Ultima. He has never run in a handicap in his whole life. He has always been weight for age races or graded races. He has come in his coat really well. He wouldn’t want it worse than good to soft simple as that. He has become very ground dependant as he has got older. If you go back to his form on decent ground at Ascot in the autumn there is no reason he couldn’t run well in an Ultima. You go back to his third in the Gold Cup off of 155 he should be very competitive. There are a few question marks to answer but hopefully it will dry out for him, and he can run a good race. Graded horses in handicaps normally find it that bit slower and are able to travel and that is what we are hoping will happen with him. The King George was a funny race. We have taken him to Kempton a few times and it has not happened for him. It was just too soft for him at Ascot. I looked at the Ascot race for a month before and I thought this is the perfect race for him, but it went too soft for him. He is a 10-year-old and I don’t know what horse will turn up to a degree but we will get him as right as possible and hopefully get a bit of decent ground and hope that he enjoys himself for the first couple of miles as he is going half a gear slower. On official ratings we are more than a stone wrong with the Gold Cup and Ryanair horses but of off 155 and he got into his rhythm and started enjoying himself he could be quite tasty. I’m loving Frodon’s entry. Paul is talking about turning up with him and we have got 11st 3lbs so it would be really nice if he stays in."
Colin Tizzard (14 October 2021): "We had a terrible time with him last season and it was hard work. He was just not himself and we ran every test that was possible, and we never were able to put our finger on the problem. He has had a hobday operation during the summer and we are in no rush with him but he looks fantastic. I think he is starting to come hand and something like the Many Clouds at Aintree springs to mind. He is in full work, and it would be nice to get him back."
Colin Tizzard (01 March 2021): "He hasn't been straightforward to train since the Betfair Chase last year and disappointed in the King George before a fantastic run in the Gold Cup. This year it hasn't quite happened for no particular reason and going on from the Denman last weekend we checked everything, and he hadn't bled again as he had a little bleed in the King George, and he blew very He is a big gross horse that hasn't had a race properly since the Gold Cup last year. He went up to Haydock and he hated the ground and Robbie (Power) was easy on him and then he bled after a couple of miles in the King George. We were keen to get another run into him and his run in the Denman has sharpened him up a treat. We haven't missed a beat coming out of it and he is having a hard couple of weeks at home to make sure he is fully fit. He won't mind the ground drying out and he is the opposite to Native River and likes a bit of good ground. He needs to improve on what he has shown on the track, but I think he is a horse who goes well in the spring and is a horse who is going in the right direction. He isn't a horse with particularly high mileage and if we can get him to back to his best who knows."
Colin Tizzard (08 October 2020): "He progressed last year winning the Betfair and it all went wrong in the King George VI Chase. That was too bad to be true, but his wind was found to be wrong, so we tweaked that. He travelled better than anything in the Gold Cup and came down the hill the best and jumped the last upsides and then got ran out of it. The way our horse ran at Cheltenham for him to do that was huge. He is back and is in cracking form and he is going to go to Haydock first and he will have a crack at another Gold Cup. I would think he certainly is good enough to win a Gold Cup if we have a bit of luck and he will be bang there again."
Colin Tizzard (02 March 2020): "He is a horse that we have held in high regard for some time. The season was going perfectly after Haydock and the wheels fell off a bit at Kempton. I can’t say we found a specific reason for it. We have tweaked his wind as he has had a soft palate operation since but that is something that was mentioned before. I think he perhaps had a harder race than we thought he had, and it was only three and a bit weeks before and it perhaps just left his toll a bit. He had his wind done the following week and he has not missed a beat since. He went for a gallop and had a good blow and that put him spot on. We are really happy where he is. Although he is a big horse he wouldn’t mind it drying out as the week goes on as Robbie has maintained that as he is a Flemensfirth he would be better on top of the ground. He was saying that all through last season and is saying that now. I don’t mind if it is a beautiful week at Cheltenham and it dries out and we get to Friday and it is just genuine good to soft as that will really suit him. His novice form last season with Defi Du Seuil is as strong as anything and he proved he stayed at Haydock. I quite like the fact he has gone a bit quite now as he can come in there without too much pressure and we feel we have him right back to where we want him. He has been freshened right up and he goes there really well. We’ve not lost any faith in him. He is a big powerful horse. He will travel around Cheltenham and I still wouldn’t write him out of it. He is a very good horse. He has got cracking form around Cheltenham. He won the Dipper then he was second in the JLT. He bounces off that nice ground. There is always that question mark about that extra couple furlongs up the hill and it takes a lot of getting but if there is some genuine good to soft ground I think he could just travel into it and be bang there at the last. It (trip) shouldn’t be as he got three miles around Aintree really well last year. He has just got that one blot with that King George run. I think it was because he had a harder race at Haydock than we thought. Bar that race at Kempton he is a very exciting horse. I don’t think mentally it will leave an impact as he has schooled well since and he is enjoying his work as much as ever. Robbie was quick to pull him up when he was beaten there so that is not a bad thing. He knew he wasn’t going to be anywhere, so he looked after the horse. He really has come back to himself at home and he looks a picture. He is really happy with his work. He has got a live chance going into as he is a good horse. If you would have said to last year you would have to beat the second and third in the RSA then I would have been comfortable taking them on. It is difficult for horses to back up winning two Gold Cups, but I certainly wouldn’t rule out Al Boum Photo out as they have looked after him well and he goes there a fresh horse. I think it is a wide-open race and as a competitive race as you can get. Whether they are stand out horses as before I’m not sure as we have had before."
Colin Tizzard (12 October 2019): "He finished last season off with a victory in the Mildmay at Aintree on his first run over three miles and he has summered extremely well. It’s the best he has ever looked and the plan is to start at Carlisle in the Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase on November 3 and it will be Haydock after that. We will see if he has improved enough to go to the King George VI Chase and a potential £1 million bonus. After that we would be hoping that the Gold Cup would be his main target."
Colin Tizzard (26 February 2019): "He is one of the favourites for the JLT and I maybe should have had him in the three-miler (RSA). When the entries went he was so good over two and a half so it is fine He was second to Defi Du Seuil so it is lovely form. He is just a lovely chaser and he has got form round Cheltenham. They will go at a pace and he can jump off pretty handy. You have only got to look at him that he is a big strong horse and whatever we do this year we can have him as a Gold Cup horse next year as that is what I think he is. He has got more stamina than speed. Barry Geraghty sat behind us at Sandown and just done us for speed from the last. That won’t happen at Cheltenham where there is 15 or 20 and the pace will be twice as much so hopefully the stamina will kick in even more. He is a lovely horse for the future. I would have thought we would step him up to three at Aintree after."
