Stable Tour Quotes
Dan Skelton (07 April 2026): "We will have a couple of entries in both the Aintree Bowl and the Melling Chase with Protektorat and Grey Dawning. We will just see which race is appropriate, but they are both in good form. Protektorat missed Cheltenham and is very well and Grey Dawning ran a great race in the Gold Cup. I am very happy with them both."
Dan Skelton (26 February 2026): "I am very proud to call him our Gold Cup runner - it is a very interesting race for lots or reasons, and the race has really yet to take shape with possible last-minute entries and all sorts. This horse is in the best form of his life, and we have been patient to some degree to get him into this form. It was fairly obvious last year that after Haydock when he got beaten on very soft ground that it was going to be very hard to get him back. We weren’t going to be going down the Gold Cup route last year and ask him some lesser questions. He was very good at Kelso and ran a beautiful race at Aintree behind Gaelic Warrior. This year was very different, and he was very imperious in the Betfair at Haydock which on numbers he should have been capable of on that ground. He ran a nice race in the Cotswold Chase and had lot of improvement from there. The improvement has arrived and we are really ready. He will be there turning in and if he is good enough from there we will find out. He stayed three miles two in the Betfair, and he has won at the course and is versatile on the ground as long as it isn’t heavy. He is rideable and he goes a little bit left-handed so is going the right way around. He is going to improve massively from the Cheltenham run and I just have a good feeling we are going there the best we can be."
Dan Skelton (16 October 2025): "It rained so much on the day in the Betfair Chase that the winner Royal Pagaille was able to take advantage of conditions. We would love it not to be so quite soft at Haydock this year and we will have another go. He did well last year, winning at Kelso and finishing second at Aintree. hopefully, we can win another Grade 1 at some point."
Dan Skelton (31 March 2025): "Obviously it didn’t go to plan earlier in the season but it was a good run at Haydock when he was second in the Betfair so there was no grumbling. He looks absolutely great, and he had a great run at Kelso obviously. It was a great run, and he got into a great rhythm. He could quite possibly be the one to beat in the Bowl Chase on Thursday."
Dan Skelton (21 February 2025): "At the moment, the idea is to go to Kelso with Grey Dawning and then Aintree. I will leave him in the Gold Cup just in case something untoward happened with the opposition and I don’t wish that upon them of course. Maybe I would have looked at this race differently if he had won at Haydock, but he didn’t, and I feel if you go to Kelso and Aintree, it gives us two chances of running twice. If he went for the Gold Cup, we would only have run him once. We need to do what is right for the horse, short and long term, I think it gives us a chance to win those races and long term maybe we can get some experience and come back a Gold Cup horse next year. Of course, I am disappointed not to be going for a Gold Cup that I thought last year we would be going for, but you have to be open to change with horses. He is in great form, looks outstanding and I think he will take a lot of beating at Kelso and if things go well at Kelso he will turn up at Aintree. I think he has recovered from Haydock to go to Kempton and what happened at Kempton was that the mistake at the first put us on the back foot and the speed that Il Est Francais went made the three milers look like four milers that day and put us all on the back foot. It was just one of those days and it didn’t work out for him - put it in the bin and he has come out of it fine."
Dan Skelton (10 October 2024): "He had a great year last year. We ran him at Aintree, but he was a little bit over the top, but he gained a little more experience from that and there was no harm done from that. He will start this year in the Charlie Hall and, hopefully, go for the Betfair Chase and then we will see. Those are the two earlier season targets, and we have Gold Cup aspirations but how we fare against the opposition in those two races will tell us. He is a growing up and getting stronger and he has won over three miles plus at Warwick, but we have to see how gets on taking a big step up in grade."
Dan Skelton (15 February 2024): "He has two entries, he is in the Turners Novices’ Chase and the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. At the moment, he is a lot more likely to go for the Brown Advisory, but we will keep an eye on the other race just in case it cuts up or something happens. He was unlucky not to win at Cheltenham on his last visit as he hit two out really hard and was flying at the line and would have won bar that mistake. Looking at his form, that is a matter of fact and Ginny’s Destiny who won that day has improved since. They are both pretty smart chasers on their day. He has kept good form all year and he will go to the Festival with a good chance."
Dan Skelton (13 October 2023): "He is a proper old chasing type, but he did win a Graded hurdle at Warwick. He fell at Aintree when I thought he might win but that is in the past now. He will go chasing and will start at Wetherby on November 3rd. Hopefully, he can become a Feltham type and he loves soft ground. If the Feltham was not soft, then we would wait for Warwick in January."
Dan Skelton (11 April 2023): "Grey Dawning is a fresh horse for the three-mile Sefton Novices’ Hurdle and that counts for a lot. He is a lovely horse and I expect him to run well."
Dan Skelton (06 October 2022): "I think he is a very exciting horse who won both of his bumpers. He jumps well and has plenty of stamina and likes soft ground. I think we are entitled to be very positive about his potential."
