As quick as that we reach the fourth and final day of the Cheltenham Festival with the feature race of the week the Gold Cup taking centre stage.
We kick off as ever with the Triumph Hurdle where PROACTIF who was promoted to favourite status when Narciso Has was ruled out a few weeks ago can strike for JP McManus. We don’t have a lot to go on - he has only been seen once for Willie Mullins and he is priced up on potential and connections rather than form. However, the stable seem to identify the right candidate for this race each season and he has the potential to be very smart over hurdles.
It looks like Willie Mullins again in the County Hurdle at 2.00 as he looks for an eight success in this in the last sixteen seasons and I just prefer KARBAU to Murcia. The selection did get beaten in the Limestone Lad Hurdle last time but that looked like a prep run for this.
Karbau was good enough to finish third in Grade One company at Aintree and Punchestown and has Cheltenham Festival experience having run in the Supreme behind Kopek Des Bordes here last term. He has plenty of upside and the stable as usual have been firing in the winners here this week.
The Gold Cup has an open look to it this year without one standout candidate for the Blue Riband of steeplechasing. Those who were involved in a pulsating finish in the King George at Kempton Park on Boxing Day are very much at the front of the market. I think those horses from that race are closely matched so I’m going to look in a different direction for the winner.
I’ve landed on last year’s winner INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN who slammed the hot favourite Galopin Des Champs in this 12 months ago. I know his form this year has been pretty pathetic so far; however, first time cheekpieces could sharpen him up and he might just be a horse that comes alive at Cheltenham.
I’m old enough to recall horses like See You Then who wasn’t seen out all season yet turned up and won the Champion Hurdle every year. Best Mate was another horse who was at his peak at the right time to win three Gold Cups.
Gavin Cromwell’s charge has a bit to do to emulate those greats but I believe he has a chance in an open renewal. There has also been some market support for the title holder in the last couple of weeks which is encouraging.
KEL HISTOIRE ran at the festival last year one, but never really figured. It looks like he’s been laid out for this with a couple of runs already this season and he looks the one to land the finale at 5.20 and cap another great week for Willie Mullins.
His jockey Michael Kenneally has looked a real talent over in Ireland this term so we have no worries on that score. The son of Masked Marvel has faced some stiff opposition in graded hurdles and gets a first go in handicap company in the Martin Pipe at 5.20 to bring the curtain down on the week.
