A race won by some good performers over the years, including Kauto Star, Monet’s Garden (three times), Smad Place and Frodon, but also some lesser individuals in receipt of weight, this year’s winner in the latter category, one of two of the first four to be out of the handicap. Overall times suggest the ground, on the chase course at least, was more like “soft”, though this race was not the strongest-run, with a finishing speed from 3 out of about 102%.
RIDERS ON THE STORM (c140 here, 144? previously) retains useful form but has been far from consistent in recent times, which needs bearing in mind when assessing his prospects in the future. He was held up going well, running from 3 lb out of the handicap, made headway to lead 2 out, was soon ridden, edged left and joined but found a bit more near the finish to prevail. He races almost exclusively at 20f/22f these days.
HITMAN (c160 here and previously) lost no standing in a narrow defeat under a big weight, held up in touch and a shade free (often the way with him), improving steadily to join issue at the last but just unable to get by. He is very smart at 16f/20f but not quite good enough to beat the best at level weights to date.
GA LAW (c141+ here, 145? previously) shaped encouragingly after a 603-day break and is young enough to get back to the level he managed as a novice. Held up in touch, he made a mistake and dropped to last 5 out, looking in trouble at that stage, but rallied well after 3 out and was still closing come the line. He used to go from the front at 16f/20f.
BEAKSTOWN (c136 here, 135 previously) ran well from 4 lb out of the handicap, tracking the pace until leading briefly before 3 out, still second approaching the last but finding no extra. He seems better at this trip than 3m.
SOLDIER OF DESTINY (c123 here, 135 previously) was a bit below form from 2 lb out of the weights, close up until weakening 3 out and slow at the next.
DO YOUR JOB (c124 here, 146 previously) was well backed and probably best forgiven this, making a couple of slight mistakes before a more serious one 4 out, after which he weakened. He did well as a novice last season, winning 3 of his 6 starts, including a Grade 2.
CAPTAIN TOM CAT (c120 here, 145? previously) had shown a bit over hurdles after a break the time before but little here, capitulating after leading for a long way.
MILLERS BANK (c0 here, 154 previously) unseated at the first.
