Expert View: Dual Grade 1 winner including Arkle this year; easily won a strong 1965 Chase (Grade 2) at Ascot by 9l last time. Trainer in form, second run after wind surgery. Effective 2–2½m and best on decent ground. Top class and hasn't finished improving. Likely to stay at least 3m in time, and a leading player though this track may not be ideal.

Star rating: 4

Form Snapshot: Winner of two hurdle races and three chases from 2m to 2m 5f on ground varying from good to soft. Won on his latest outing in a Grade 2 chase when 9-4fav in the Group 2 Ladbrokes 1965 Chase at Ascot over 2m 5f (good) last month, beating Gidleigh Park by 9l.

Stable Tour Quotes

Nicky Henderson (14 October 2026): "He won the Arkle two seasons ago over two miles, but we knew he wanted further and he turned out to be one of our stars again. He won the Ladbrokes 1965 Chase at Ascot over two miles and five and then went to Kempton for the King George and in a nail-biting finish he was beaten less than a length into fourth. We went straight to the Cheltenham Gold Cup after that, and he ran another cracking race to finish second to Gaelic Warrior and then ended the season with an easy success in the Bowl Chase. Let’s hope we can see more of the same this season, but he won’t be ready in time for the King George and the long-term aim is another crack at the Gold Cup. He has given us an immense amount of excitement, and I hope he will continue to do so for his owner Tony Barney."

Nicky Henderson (07 April 2026): "Jango Baie has done absolutely nothing wrong in his three races this year and ran another very good race last time when finishing runner-up to Gaelic Warrior in the Gold Cup. He, like others of my team, has benefited from the extra week between Cheltenham and Aintree, and will take his chance in the Bowl Chase on Thursday. We hope would have a very obvious chance."

Nicky Henderson (24 February 2026): "He is entitled to be given a real realistic chance in the Gold Cup. It was a real great run in the King George, and everything has gone well. We thought of running in the Denman for a bit but in that ground, and having watched Dublin the week before and those horses getting hard races in very bad ground, slightly put me off. We would be better off coming in fresh rather than getting a race like that. Lulamba went to Newbury that day for a different reason he needed the experience, but Jango Baie didn’t need either and came to Kempton to gallop today. He has had two runs this season and he was very good at Ascot the first time and he was good in the King George. The only thing I can say is in the King George for a horse that had won the Arkle he just appeared to get a little flat footed turning up the back. There was a sudden injection of pace after they had slowed down a bit and there was kick and just for a moment he got caught and then finished really well. We know he comes up the hill, and he has the pace to win over two miles and I would be very disappointed and surprised if he didn’t stay in the Gold Cup. We have that bit of tactical speed he has as well which will hold him through the race. I think he ticks most boxes and he is pretty talented. Nico was very happy with his gallop today, and he just kept on at the end."

Nicky Henderson (15 October 2025): "We were extremely proud of achievements as he probably only ran in the Arkle as Sir Gino was unavailable and from being nearly tailed off coming down the hill he came with a whirlwind finish to land the spoils. He ran another cracker when a close third in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase, but he pulled up lame and suffered an injury which necessitated having a screw inserted. Two and a half miles will almost certainly be his minimum trip, and he could well stay three in the near future. He has, already, been seriously exciting and we have the dream of more to come."

Nicky Henderson (01 April 2025): "I think he will run on Thursday rather than Friday. He is very well and looks great it was an amazing effort at Cheltenham, and he seems to have taken the race very well."

Nicky Henderson (17 February 2025): "The Arkle would be our line of argument at the moment. Our original plan was that he was a two-and-a-half-mile horse, but I think he is more likely to down in trip rather than up. I am sure he will stay three miles, and the dilemma is that the two and a half mile chase has been taken away the year we have a horse for it. They go a good gallop in the Arkle and that will suit him perfectly. I thought he was very good at Sandown the other day and he was only beaten a short head in desperate ground. He jumped beautifully and was very accurate and he has pace. Better ground will suit him, and Sir Gino has left the door open for him."

Nicky Henderson (15 October 2024): "He did extremely well in his first season over hurdles and won the Tolworth was run at Aintree for the first time. He sort of suffered as a result of that win as he was carrying a 5lb penalty in two Grade 2s and then ran really well at Aintree after being badly hampered two out. He has done very well over the summer, and he now goes novice chasing where he could well go to the top."

Nicky Henderson (09 April 2024): "He will run in the two and a half mile novices’ hurdle on Saturday. He and Peaky Boy would run in that Mersey Hurdle. Both of them have rock solid form and they are similar horses. Peaky Boy’s form at Cheltenham is very good and Jango Baie won the Tolworth around Aintree and I think two and a half will help him. He was second in the Sydney Banks and second in the Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso, both times giving away a Grade 1 penalty, but at least he doesn’t have to give that away this time."
